Gerard, I think that cartoon is actually quite unfair. It's one thing to air-assault onto open terrain, set pickets, and define a landing area. It's quite another to jump into a crowd of suicidal/homicidal jihadists who are waiting for you.

All the hand-wringing over the Israeli operation seems highly misguided to me.

Hamas openly and repeatedly proclaims its intention of destroying the State of Israel and murdering all the Jews in the world.

And then put the rest of the world under shariah law.

If Israel had allowed the ships to make port in Gaza, Hamas would want to destroy the State of Israel and kill all the Jews in the world.

If Israel had sunk the fleet with torpedoes, Hamas would want to destroy the State of Israel and kill all the Jews in the world.

As it went down, the ships were prevented from making port in Gaza. About a dozen jihadist terrorists were killed. There appears to have been no casualty among non-terrorists aboard any ship. And there were no Israeli casualties.

What's not to like?

Is there any other military force in the world that would have done as well?

If a fleet or a caravan approached Tibet, would the P.L.A. respond with a force initially using paintballs?

If a fleet or a caravan approached the Kurdish areas of Turkey, would the Turks respond with a force initially armed with paintballs?

When the West still wanted to live, the stakes were higher, and the cost far greater, there was I'll bet no hand-wringing over the fate of the Sultan's fleet off Lepanto.

I can see using paintballs - to mark the ones you want to later kill with one color, and non-combatants with another color.
