Sippican On Labor Day

People enter into all sorts of organized things-- corporations and unions; rock bands and time-share condo deals; bowling leagues and the Cosa Nostra. I wish you all well. But me? I never wanted to be equivalent of the child in that picture, who doesn't even know what the sign says; and as long as there's breath in my body I'll never again put myself in the thrall of that hand you see, if you look closely, reaching in from the top right corner of the picture. -- Sippican Cottage: (How I Came To) Disregard The Man Behind The Curtain

My only question: is The Raleigh hiring?

Whatever virus it is that causes "leave-me-alone-I'll-do-it-myself" infected me early. I get it. I also understand the need to organize one thing or another, and I see the reasons for banding together to do...whatever. But I doesn't likes it, so leaves me out of it.
And The Raleigh was bought by a venture capital company, broke into little sell-able bits, and the employees sent packing. Welcome to the modern damned world.

Was a member of a union for 25 years. Fortunately, the union, ALPA, was run by its members not professional union goons. The union managed to improve airline safety and kept working conditions reasonable. After I retired some hardcore members took over the union, and afetr 9/11, helped drive the company into bankruptcy. At least that's the way I see it. Some call it "bad luck."

I guess what I got from this is that a union is only as good as the people who are running it. The union members should never forget the concept that the company must make a profit. No profit = no job.

I like the idea of honoring labor, but not necessarily labor unions. Most of us sell our labor as a means of making a living. It is an honorable tradition that has helped build the country.
