I made my escape 5 years earlier, and it sho' weren't pretty in those days either. One of the first things I remember seeing in the lower East Side (2nd Ave. maybe) was a naked man with a very large kitchen knife screaming and walking quickly down the street as people scurried out of his path. Too many things to list came afterwards...went back "for a minute" in '85, then the final tour, in a renewed '96-'07. Those early seventies years are permanently etched in memory though. Horrid. I know those also who refuse to leave. Sliwa, I don't know why or how he managed. Maybe the cops, maybe luck. He was hated. The place had a pull on me for decades. Now, I avoid it, and places like it. (they'll say there's nonesuch, but many know what I mean) Good luck to the faithful.
