THE CULTURE WITH WAY TOO MUCH TIME ON ITS HANDS: SPEED LACES, shoe lacing system

"Ordinary laces are jammed up in a matrix of friction. We moved lacing to the surface of the shoe and eliminated the friction. Now your lacing is free to flow through your shoe."

And when the lacing is in the flowing within the shoes, all is of the best in Manolo World!.

YOU COULD LOOK IT UP, but why would Robert F. Kennedy Jr. bother when he could just make it up?

" Kennedy said, 'A farmer sent me a copy of the American Heritage Dictionary's definition of fascism the other day, and the definition is roughly that the control of government by large corporations with right-wing ideologies, driven by bellicose nationalism. That has a familiar ring these days.'

"For the record, the American Heritage Dictionary, as available on the web, includes the phrase 'belligerent nationalism' but does not include references to corporations or 'right-wing ideology.' "

NOTHING TO LOSE BUT THE SHINE ON YOUR SHOES: Shoe polish

"Prior to 1906, shoe polish was not well known as a purchasable product, nor was it particularly sophisticated. While sales were not especially high, a few brands, like Nugget, were available in England during the 1800s. The practice of shining people’s shoes gradually caught on and soon many shoeshine boys in the city streets were offering shoe shines using a basic form of shoe polish along with a polishing cloth."

When I was a kid growing up in Boston during the 60's, lot's of kids made their own shinebox, bought a few tins of polish, brushes and cloths and set off hitting every bar, tavern and pub in the vicinity. I started out by accompanying my older brother and just standing around looking cute. When I got a bit older it was time to venture out on my own. Our territory was under the old Orange Line trains, along Washington street from Forest Hills to Dudley Station. There were dozens of watering holes along the way. We easily earned enough money for movies, sweets and comic books, the essentials of a young boy's life then. There were dangers, too. Getting jumped and robbed, chased out by angry bartenders, beligerent drunks, and other shineboys competing for customers. Your post generated just a whiff of nostalgia.
