Robert Hughes, The Most Feared Art Critic of His Time. passes on:
Skill at painting and drawing were his measure of artistic success, and he found it in the work of Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Philip Pearlstein, Susan Rothenberg, Elizabeth Murray, Philip Guston, R. Crumb and David Hockney. No one has written better on Goya, the subject of one of his last books. About video or any form of Pop or conceptual art from the '60s, he was largely indifferent unless huge sums of money were thrown at it, in which case he could show his fangs.

What Graham Crackers Can Teach Us About Whole Foods:
In this fantasy, the First Lady, Michael Pollan, and Mark Bittman regard me with approval. This zeal fades quickly as the fruit flies come to feast on the tomatoes that I never seem to eat fast enough, and as I cave after a long day and dig into an ice-cream bar made with unpronounceable ingredients. Guilt soon sets in. Again, I have failed to live up to the high standards of today’s food reformers, where we eat simply, locally, and organically. All the time.Obama the Cripplemaker
Obama does not “create” jobs, he creates disabled people: In the same period as 2.6 million Americans signed on with new employers, 3.1 million signed on at the Social Security Disability Office. Obama is the first president in history to create more disabled people than workers. He is the biggest creator of disabled people on the planet. He has disabled more people than the Japanese tsunami. More Americans have been disabled by Obama than have been given cancer by Mitt Romney. “Ask yourself, ‘Are you more disabled now than you were four years ago?’ Obama 2012.” -- Milquetoast Mitt - Mark Steyn

Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. -- Revelation 18Posted by gerardvanderleun at August 13, 2012 12:26 PM

We'll certainly miss the best of Mr. Hughes.
His disdain for the insularity of the art world and his appreciation for craft was his gift to us. I've spent many happy hours since his demise reviewing some of the best of his work on YouTube. I recommend Visions Of Space and of course, Shock Of The New.
Writing about art is still like painting about music, though. As always, YMMV.

You may have heard the Martin Mull line "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture..." Still true, still unfortunately seductive - and Hughes undoubtedly would have agreed. Thanks for the tip on utube, I've been looking already.
By the way, a friend told me in the '60s about Mezzarollas; ever heard of those?
