The Sunrise Shadow of Mt. Rainer

I'd long since accepted the notion that was large enough to create its own weather. I didn't know that the mountain bending space and time.

Transfiguring.

I've been out to the Mt. Rainier National Park a couple of times. Being originally from NJ and now living in TX, two flat-to-hilly places, I have to say that there really is something so sublime about seeing that enormous formation of earth both up close and from the distance of, say, Tacoma, on the rare occasions it isn't obscured by clouds. And never in my life, prior to my first visit to the park, had I ever smelled "sweet" air. A trip there is a delightful sensory feast. Maybe exactly what you need as soon as you're able to get out there, if you can, and before the snow starts if it hasn't already.

I had the same experience as a kid, when I moved to Tacoma and saw the mountain on a rare, clear day. Knocked down with awe would be putting it mildly.

I grew up in that shadow. I've been away longer than I was there, but suddenly I'm homesick. I had forgotten how beautiful it is.

Agree with comments above. I climbed Rainier in '78 and also did the Wonderland Trail around its base that wonderful summer. Seattle is outstanding except for too many people and too much congestion (and its politics).

I picture Mt Doom sweeping for intruders that way.
