Issac Asimov once wrote an article about the transmission of information in permanent form. After going through all the proposals and ideas at that time to make obtaining information easier, be described a thing which ended up as a book.

In one of David Brin's "Uplift" books, sophisticated star-traveling Galactics are trapped on a primitive world and are introduced to books.

After some confusion, one of them becomes enthusiastic: "A permanent, random-access data store that isn't detectable from orbit!"
