Proposal for a HyperText Project
T. Berners-Lee / CN, R. Cailliau / ECP
Abstract:
HyperText is a way to link and access information of various kinds as a web of nodes in which the user can browse at will. Potentially, HyperText provides a single user-interface to many large classes of stored information such as reports, notes, data-bases, computer documentation and on-line systems help. We propose the implementation of a simple scheme to incorporate several different servers of machine-stored information already available at CERN, including an analysis of the requirements for information access needs by experiments.
Out of that, this.
Posted by Vanderleun at November 12, 2010 9:48 AMHah! I came up with the idea of the universal browser long (well, maybe a year) before these two. At the time, when one wanted to connect to a remote computer, one needed a modem control program. You needed to know what protocol the target computer used. You needed to know what typing +++ would do.
I sketched out the requirements for a universal modem program that could interface with any computer. It wouldn't matter if the computer on the other end was a VAX, IBM or DEC, or even a PC BBS. The user would interact with all of them in a consistent way, and this would lead to an explosion of interaction and usability.
Of course, the difference is that they actually wrote some code, while I just talked about it.
