Hamburger Stand on the Road to Hell

"Hamburger stand with old cattle brands. Dumas, Texas."

A three-blog bank shot.

This photo from Branding: 1939 @ Shorpy - History in HD [Hi-Def shot is HERE.] .... elicits this comment at Jake Lake's Livejournal: Branding: 1939 -- I swear, if the Cold Waste had hamburger stands they'd look like this one. Note the eldritch runes along the top of the wall.... which stimulates this intense description from Mythusmage....

"It's a ramshackle edifice athwart the road to Dis. Time smoothed basalt bearing still vague signs of arcane sigils and ancient runes. Most, when rendered into English, saying, "Grand Opening Special." It consists entirely of stove, refrigerator, griddle, and a plank on two splintery casks that still smells of Sumerian ale. The last a improvised replacement for a counter that never got delivered.

"Behind the counter stands a demon. A demon who watches the road with wary optimism. An old demon who's hide has faded to a white dappled with faint green, horns worn down to nubbins by the constant wind, and eyes weary with long ages, reddened by the smoke of millions of fried hamburgers and baked potatoes.

"Burgers and fries and cold, crisp Cokes. Sugar sweetened Cokes made with spring water, and those cylindrical ice cubes with the poked in end that crunches just right in your teeth. Baked potatoes with butter and cheese, because some angel thought they should be included. And forget not the milkshakes. Real shakes, real milk. Chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and butterscotch. No hamburger stand is worth the name without butterscotch shakes. This is what he serves, there on the road to Dis." - A Hotdog in Gehenna : Mythusmage Opines

Ah, Gray, you can comment at the post in question you know.

(People tend to miss that about posts they found through a link somewhere else.)
