You can bet that if it had been about a busload of transgendered Nicaraguan poets, the reviewer would have appreciated the playfully queered gaze achieved by the film's narrow focus, and how the lack of fully realized characters was a subversive device aimed at decentering our heteronormative expectations. Furthermore, the post-colonial absence of any historical or political context was clearly a comment on the Eurocentric hegemony of patriarchal "phallic time," that is ironically so long and hard on those endowed with white privilege.

Re: why United 93 was made

Call me kooky, but I'd offer that it isn't complicated: because it is a compelling story about American resolve and heroism. Made by a British director.

Just watched the movie today and I was stunned, jolted, and heartened by it. Stunned at how real it felt - I have over 2,000,000 air miles on commercial flights as a passenger and this was spot on in capturing that experience. Jolted, by the cold-blooded viciousness of the terrorists and the unquestioning resolve of the passengers on the flight. And heartened to know that there still are Americans like those on UA93 who will spend their last minutes on Earth fighting for what is right.

On a technical note, I recently retired from the FAA and the stuff you see in this movie - even down to the smallest detail is perfectly accurate.

See this movie and watch the audience when it is done. I was in a full theater and you could hear a pin drop. The house lights went up and people filed out without saying a word. A look of sorrow and resolve was on every face. No movie has ever affected me this way and I am so glad I saw it.
