Reviewer Without a Clue

MANOHLA DARGIS is predictably and dependably on top of the current blather points in her New York Times' review of "United 93." 1) Exploitation! 2) Why was it made?

But that narrow focus, along with the lack of fully realized characters, and the absence of any historical or political context, raises the question of why, notwithstanding the usual (if shaky) commercial imperative, this particular movie was made. To jolt us out of complacency? Remind us of those who died? Unite us, as even the film's title seems to urge? Entertain us?

To be honest, I haven't a clue. I didn't need a studio movie to remind me of the humanity of the thousands who were murdered that day or the thousands who have died in the wars waged in their name.

Well, at least she's being "honest" about her needs. Proof again, if more proof was needed, that you don't have to be a clueless moron to work for the New York Times but, since you will mirror the Publisher, it certainly can't hurt your career path. Here's hoping the next time a mass murder goes down in New York that Ms. Dargis and her collegues at the paper have the aisle seats.

Buy a ticket to "United 93" Varifrank suggests that we buy a ticket so that Hollywood will not have an excuse to produce the next "Syriana".

MSNBC has a reviewer on earlier. His "concern" was that "United 93" was fictionalized! "We don't know what really happened?

No LIAR,
1)with all the tapes of conversations of the passengers,

2)with the flight recorder,

3)with tapes and records from:
----Air traffice controllers,
----TSA
----US Military
----Interceptor flights pilots
and on and on....

We don't know everything about United 93.

But %$**##!!! Hollywood KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT JESUS AND CHRISTIANITY - hence
"The DaVinci Code"
TLC's Judas Gospel
I lose it with these persons.

Please forgive my CAPS!!!!! AND !!!!!!.
I admit to rigeous rage.

Buy a ticket to UNITED 93, even if you are afraid to see it now in a theater.

We want boxoffice to educate Hollywood again.

You can bet that if it had been about a busload of transgendered Nicaraguan poets, the reviewer would have appreciated the playfully queered gaze achieved by the film's narrow focus, and how the lack of fully realized characters was a subversive device aimed at decentering our heteronormative expectations. Furthermore, the post-colonial absence of any historical or political context was clearly a comment on the Eurocentric hegemony of patriarchal "phallic time," that is ironically so long and hard on those endowed with white privilege.

Re: why United 93 was made

Call me kooky, but I'd offer that it isn't complicated: because it is a compelling story about American resolve and heroism. Made by a British director.

I blame George Bush.

Just watched the movie today and I was stunned, jolted, and heartened by it. Stunned at how real it felt - I have over 2,000,000 air miles on commercial flights as a passenger and this was spot on in capturing that experience. Jolted, by the cold-blooded viciousness of the terrorists and the unquestioning resolve of the passengers on the flight. And heartened to know that there still are Americans like those on UA93 who will spend their last minutes on Earth fighting for what is right.

On a technical note, I recently retired from the FAA and the stuff you see in this movie - even down to the smallest detail is perfectly accurate.

See this movie and watch the audience when it is done. I was in a full theater and you could hear a pin drop. The house lights went up and people filed out without saying a word. A look of sorrow and resolve was on every face. No movie has ever affected me this way and I am so glad I saw it.

Undecided about United 93, but we bought tickets anyway Dinocrat

..... One more thing: we don’t know what we’d do if some little creeps in the audience started in with the ‘Bush knew’ business. We want to see the movie where all these Islamist SOB’s are killed and their countries reduced to rubble if they should so much as raise a peep. In our rage, we don’t want simply sacrifice and heroics, as magnificent as they are; we want total and complete victory and the unconditional, humiliating surrender of the enemy — or better still, his death. We encourage you to purchase tickets whether or not you can bring yourself to see the film.

Dinocrat doesn't mince words. His is another great site worth reading.

Dargis wants "historical and political context". If the context was there, do you really think she would like it?
