These Are the Most Magnificent Chickens You’ll Ever See

Tamara Staples vividly remembers her first time at a poultry show.

“I remember stepping inside and being blown away by the birds,” Staples recounted. “They were gorgeous! And the show itself—the people, the smell, the sounds, the camaraderie of the shows and the beauty of the birds—who knew there were so many varieties of chickens beyond what you think about when they’re on your dinner plate?” Tamara Staples: "The Magnificent Chicken" examines varieties of championship chickens (PHOTOS).

The most magnificent chickens I’ll ever see, were deep fried in bacon grease by my mother's housekeeper. They were so good. It makes me shiver to remember.

Living chickens. Meh.

"It all ends in Chickens" -someone at According to Hoyt. Chickens are actually great little food factories. They convert grass and weeds into eggs and meat quite efficiently, and can be entertaining as well.

We owe a lot to chickens. Eggs, meat, fertilizer, and entertainment. Reasonably priced, high quality protein without much capital expenditure. What's not to like?

She was doing OK 'till she mentioned smell (presuming a chicken show smells like a chicken coop). Ugh.

One of first hens I ever met lost her head to my grandmother's hatchet on a stump in her yard. It didn't bother me a bit and that story of the headless chicken running around isn't a myth.

Good stuff. I agree, what's not to like?

Ever been in a turkey processing plant, & in particular, the part where the gobblers are de-feathered? Now THAT'S magnificent!

I've been to a chicken show and there is actually very little, if any, smell to it.

I have been in a chick'n pluk'n plant one time. That was the last time. The smell is horrific and the devices of torture the chickens swing from are something out of the SAW franchise.

I had Popeye’s that night. When the chickenshit hits you in the face you gotta get right back on that chicken. Oh, wait. That's not what I meant.
