Something Wonderful: Do You Hear the People Sing?

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of the people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes.

"One gentleman, whose name I never heard, was an earnest “friend of the people,” and descanted with much enthusiasm upon the glorious future then opening upon this new-born nation, and predicted the perpetuity of our institutions, from the purity and intelligence of the people, their freedom from interest or prejudice, their enlightened love of liberty, &c, &c. Alexander Hamilton was among the guests; and, his patience being somewhat exhausted, he replied with much emphasis, striking his hand upon the table,

“Your people, sir,—your people is a great beast!”

This old anvil laughs at many broken hammers.
There are men who can't be bought.
The fireborn are at home in fire.
            The stars make no noise,
You can't hinder the wind from blowing.
            Time is a great teacher.
            Who can live without hope?

In the darkness with a great bundle of grief
            the people march.
In the night, and overhead a shovel of stars for keeps, the people
march:
            "Where to? what next?"

"Where to? What next?"
Onward, forward, downward, upward, round-a-bout, learning, yearning -- as always.
Equipped [some say burdened] with the traditions and values that have served us well in the past and which give guidance for each next step.
The 'fireborn' love to stay hot and bothered; that's how they fire the fakers and the fascists!

Good song, obscure revolution. If Hugo hadn't personally been ducking bullets we wouldn't have heard of it.

The Liberation of Cuba from Spain in the Spanish-American War figures large in literature and film; Rough Riders, The Maine, San Juan Hill. If a later president hadn't been there, Hearst hadn't wanted to sell newspapers and even Winston Churchill hadn't been the one ducking bullets would it have been big box office?

march:

"Where to? what next? (Carl Sanburg)

---

Do you hear the people sing
Lost in the valley of the night
It is a music of a people
that are climbing to the light.
For the wretched of the wearth
There is a flame that never dies.
Even in the darkest night will end
And the sun will rise.

We will live in freedom
In the garden of the lord.
We will walk behind the plough-share,
We will put away the sword.
The chain will be broken
And all men will have their reward.

Will you join in our Crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Somewhere beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?
Do you hear the people sing?
Say do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!
