Just In Case You Were Worried There Wouldn't Be a New Dystopian Movie Out Soon

Elevators become new traps for the hunters.

The supermarket on the seventh floor is one last place to forage. Even the soundtrack reimagines this future past for the audience, Portishead performing ABBA’s pop hit “S.O.S.” as a warning for the residents and viewers alike—a dirge for a new world. ... We scurry past a horse on a rooftop, a gang of TV presenters armed with baseball bats and chair legs, a dog drowned in the pool. Parties turn into rituals, sacrifices, religious ceremonies and then dissolve back into chaos once again. A Dirge for a New World | The Casual Optimist

I tend to forgive J.G. Ballard much, given that a good deal of his childhood was spent in a Japanese interment camp.

Forgiveness aside, there is something to be said about keeping your monsters at bay, refusing to give them form, and not loosing them on the world.

When I read Auden, the monsters are always lurking just off the page. But Auden bears that cross and makes that sacrifice and refuses to share his nightmares with us.

I forgive Ballard. I bless Auden.

el baboso knows far more about Auden and Ballard than me, though monsters of many iterations are among my constant companions. I treat Faulkner with the same forgiveness and see the paw-prints of southern monsters in my mind.
Jean Sheppard ("A Christmas Story" among others) had more than a normal dose of bitterness in his life; story telling might be very effective therapy.

A dystopian world shouldn't be rendered as a fantasy. It gives the people false hope, as if it can't truly exist.

It's faithful to the book.

Forty years later, you can find the real-life High-Rise in Caracas.
