Other than the Marines flag raising at Mt. Suribachi, I consider this photograph to be the second most iconic of WWII and still leaves me mesmerized every time I see it. I ruminate over the gravity of the situation at hand and the destiny of those brave souls that are involved.

From a time when people spoke with clarity.

Not needing to tell you they were going to speak with clarity.

In today's America the grandchildren of the generation that won the big war look back on WWII with a sort of puzzlement. The children and grandchildren of that generation have never won a war. Many have fought and died but somehow the outcome never fits the definition of "victory". Our leaders have fed our young men into a number of police actions, conflicts and operations not one of which has ended up with a clear-cut win for our side.

That WWII generation didn't talk a lot about their war. Following generations talk about it quite a bit - far more often than they do the wars they have had to fight in their own time. The old-timers so thoroughly defeated the Axis powers that they haven't presented even a minor threat to their neighbors since. Our young men, who fought just as hard and took just as many risks and many of whom paid a terrible price are still facing down the same enemies in the same places with no end in sight. They smash the enemy in Korea or Vietnam or Iraq and then are told to hold in place or withdraw entirely. They sacrifice life and limb and sometimes sanity at the behest of "leaders" ruled by fear or who are just too, too clever and cannot visualize the outcome for all the political calculations and machinations over which they obsess. Our young men give everything and their "leaders" give them nothing in return. Not even consistently decent care for the wounded and aged who survive their service.

I don't know what our young men fight for any more. The nation is being turned into a swamp of degenerate hedonism bereft of patriotism or even basic decency or virtue. Who could fight for such a thing? They must be fighting for their comrades, their families and friends, their churches and their neighbors.

The time may well come when the bulk of our young men realize this and come to the conclusion that to fight for the degenerates and criminals who dominate D.C. is not only an unworthy effort but is actually doing harm to those they truly love and cherish and for whom they actually fight. Our "leaders" have a sense of this and so they list veterans as people to be watched for signs of "extremism". And they work hard to feminize the military and infiltrate it with degenerates and the mentally ill. This is done as much to keep real warriors out as it is to ensure "diversity" within.

I am in a sour mood. Over the past few years I find myself in this frame of mind more and more. I see nothing on the horizon likely to improve it.
