I had several partings and reunions at Ft. Stewart when my son was with the 5/7 CAV of the 3rd Infantry Division. These are incredibly joyful moments for families, and deeply lonely ones for the single soldiers with no one there to welcome them.

I miss the days my son filled the house with battle buddies with nowhere to spend leave. Several continued to come for weekends, till they left the Army, just because there is inexpensive skydiving nearby, and the free beds and meals, and the well-stocked liquor cabinet, and Atlanta's nightlife just down the road.

I think of those young men often and pray they are well and happy. They are ever welcome at my hearth and table. I thank each and all of them for their sacrifice and for the burdens of war they carry on their soul.
