FINAL FEARS CONFIRMED: How Computers Really Work

GOOD QUESTION: John Hawkins asks and answers. "It is a violation of Godwin's law to say that Iran is the greatest threat to Jews since the Nazis? Whether it is or not, it's still true."

BEYOND LAWN ORNAMENTS The Gay Flamingo Agenda: "Carlos and Fernando have been together now for five years and seem perfectly happy together. Both of them take on the male roles during the courtship ritual which involves preening, strutting and waving their heads vigorously from side

to side with their necks at full stretch. Their parental instincts are also very strong prompting them to raid the nests of other couples in the flock. They have been known to fight the heterosexual birds and there is usually a 'handbags at dawn' moment where they will fight with another couple before stealing their egg. They are both large adult males so as a partnership they are quite formidable and are afforded more respect from the other birds. They are also very good parents and behave just as the heterosexual birds do when rearing their young."

USUAL SUSPECTS: Price gouging defined ... if we're going to blame price-gouging, we'll need a definition. My friend Craig Harrison offers this two-parter:
Price Gouging. Price Gouging is defined to be any profit made by a company in an industry that is defined to be a Suspect Industry.

Suspect Industry. Any company that is engaged in any energy activity, or any company or industry that is designated by any elected official of the Democratic Party to be a Suspect Industry by any public statement. Under no circumstances will trial lawyers, the health care industry, unions or the abortion industry be included within this category.

OLDEST NATIVE AMERICAN probably not "Native-American" after all: Kennewick Man Skeletal Find May Revolutionalize Continent's History "What the experts were able to ascertain from their brief encounter with Kennewick is that he did not look like a Native American. In fact, Berryman says Kennewick’s facial features are most similar to those of a Japanese group called the Ainu, who have a different physical makeup and cultural background from the ethnic Japanese."

OTHER LATE-BREAKING SKULL NEWS: Docs find 12 nails in man's skull "The unnamed 33-year-old was "suicidal and high on methamphetamine" when he attempted to nail himself into the grave last year. Docs didn't at first spot any outward signs of the extra metal, but a subsequent X-ray revealed "six nails clustered between his right eye and ear, two below his right ear and four on the left side of his head."

157 MILES PER GALLON: Due in 2009, The Loremo. billed as Light, Sexy And Fun To Drive "Why do we need 1.5 tons of steel to get an 80 kg person from A to B? That's the question Gerhard Heilmaier, Stefan Ruetz and Uli Sommer asked themselves six years ago which led them to form an innovative company named LoReMo - Low Resistance Mobility. LoReMo used this week's Geneva Show to introduce its first car - a featherweight (450 kg), highly aerodynamic (Cw value of 0.20) 2 2 auto powered by a 20 PS (15 kw) two-cylinder turbo-diesel motor capable of 1.5 litre/100km (157 mpg) that will sell for 11,000 euro (US$13,200). Want more speed? The 50 PS (37 kW) three-cylinder turbo-diesel Loremo GT can top 220 km/h (138 mph) returning 2.7 l/100 km (88 mpg) for less than 15,000 euro (US$18,000)."

WITH GREAT SUCCESS comes great stupidity. John Dvorak on The Great Microsoft Blunder [Editor: Only one?] " [Microsoft] must have some of the lowest corporate self-esteem for any dominant company in the history of modern business. The company is like the panicky old woman wondering how she lost a penny in her purse while giving exact change in the express line at the grocery store. Hey lady, you are holding things up!

"So what can Microsoft do about its dilemma? First, it needs to face the fact that this entire preoccupation with the browser business is bad for the company and bad for the user. Microsoft should pull the browser out of the OS and discontinue all IE development immediately. It should then bless the Mozilla.org folks with a cash endowment and take an investment stake in Opera, to influence the future direction of browser technology from the outside in. Then, Microsoft can worry about security issues that are OS-only in nature, rather than problems compounded by Internet Explorer."

I can't believe that Dvorak doesn't understand Microsoft's corporate strategy as evidenced by its behavior over the last 20 years: Microsoft is about control of the computing environment, particularly the development environment. Gates has no interest in browsers but browser functionality is the controlling factor in software development and, consequently, there's not a snowball's chance in hell of Microsoft's following Dvorak's prescription.
