I must have been sleeping when this became an "official" national holiday. Of course,the question of which nation is still, sort of, open.

A holiday dedicated to drinking beer and eating greasy food deserves our support, no matter where it came from.

Mexican Independence Day (from Spain) is in September. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the throwing off of a dictator, although most celebrants here in New Mexico are generally too drunk to tell you who, what, when and where. If they ever knew. . .
