I must have been sleeping when this became an "official" national holiday. Of course, the question of which nation is still, sort of, open.
Posted by gerardvanderleun at May 5, 2013 7:47 AMA holiday dedicated to drinking beer and eating greasy food deserves our support, no matter where it came from.
Posted by: Fat Man at May 5, 2013 9:51 AMI like Obama's holiday, "Quatro de Cinco" which he celebrates around this time.
Posted by: Vermont Woodchuck at May 5, 2013 10:51 AMI'm with Fat Man. For me, May 5 has always been an excuse to drink tequila and eat burritos. Not that I need an excuse, but I'll take one if one is available.
Posted by: waltj at May 5, 2013 11:10 AMI was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and, along with many other friends and acquaintances from Latin America (including a Mexican!), didn't know about 5 de mayo until quite recently.
But it's a nice day for a celebration. Skol!

A madeup holiday for Reconquistas and LaRazites just like the PC-BS of Kwanza
Dee mongrelization, eet continues, si ?
Posted by: LIGAF at May 5, 2013 5:48 PMJust like St Patrick's day, it's essentially a 'holiday' popularized by the alcohol companies.
Posted by: joe_mama at May 5, 2013 10:32 PMIts a beer holiday, created by advertisers. Mexicans really don't care much about the day - or didn't until told they should, I suppose, but it sells a lot of beer.
Posted by: Christopher Taylor at May 7, 2013 1:32 PMOddly, enough, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated north of the border, not south of it, for the most part. Mexican Independence Day (from Spain) is in September. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the throwing off of a dictator, although most celebrants here in New Mexico are generally too drunk to tell you who, what, when and where. If they ever knew. . .
