How many Ebola cases are really simmering in Africa? That depends on who is underreporting them.

The Center for Disease Control: Estimating the Future Number of Cases in the Ebola Epidemic — Liberia and Sierra Leone, 2014–2015

To aid in planning for additional disease-control efforts, CDC constructed a modeling tool called EbolaResponse to provide estimates of the potential number of future cases. If trends continue without scale-up of effective interventions, by September 30, 2014, Sierra Leone and Liberia will have a total of approximately 8,000 Ebola cases. A potential underreporting correction factor of 2.5 also was calculated. Using this correction factor, the model estimates that approximately 21,000 total cases will have occurred in Liberia and Sierra Leone by September 30, 2014. Reported cases in Liberia are doubling every 15–20 days, and those in Sierra Leone are doubling every 30–40 days.
There. Now don't you feel better now that you are better informed?

Not to worry. We've got thousands of soldiers wandering around in those pestholes and they'll be home soon with the truth. I, for one, certainly hope Barack Obama greets and shakes the hands of each and every one of them.

Doctors Without Borders requested for the first time ever military intervention from U.S. back in April when they saw the new iteration of the virus. Ebola wasn't killing people within hours of contact. That made its R rate less than 2. It died out quickly.

Now Ebola is weaker-- in order to allow victims to receive more potential contact and opportunity to spread. DWB saw this and understood the urgency. In April. It's September.

The military presence isn't just for building, but for enforced quarantine. Could get ugly.

The strategy for handling Ebola can be very simple.
I propose draconian and insensitive remedies: identify, isolate, kill, burn. Simplistic but imminently feasible given the primitive conditions, the remote areas, the low genetic makeup.

Hold on, not racist - just the facts.

The logistics support this strategy. Isolated and easily cordoned off, far enough from civilization that travel can be monitored and interrupted.

I bet there are some killings, out in the boonies where the sun don't shine, but not enough.

The rationale is, collateral damage minimal and benefits for the greater good. I guess my Kraut mindset shows, uh? Highly unlikely this will happen — no press and no money changing hands, greasing wheels and whatnot.

This plays better: Uncle Sam the Samaritan Man. We have landed a couple thousand troops and wheelbarrows full of equipment and bales of money in, where, Liberia?

Just think, donuts and coffee from the Red Cross and ten percent error rate. Photo ops abound: a suited up doctor (or maintenance man, who knows?) patting a victim on the back there, there. A pristine treatment room, all shiny glass and steel, for looks, not for blood and mucus and excrement all over the place, with a smell that would knock a buzzard off a gut wagon.

We're doomed, doomed I tell ya.

There must be another angle. Obama works for the UN no?, why wouldn't they have the blue hats do the cop work? I can't help but think that something more sinister is at play. Maybe it's just as simple as him showing off for his dictator buddies, ie; the Marine holding the umbrella, etc. but given his malicious demeanor towards the military, I can't help think negative.

Will, yeah, it vibes bad no matter how you look at it. Maybe it is just part of the smoke and mirrors, get us looking at that while the home front falls apart.
Another angle that always gets results: follow the money.
I thought maybe he is sending troops and officers that he knows actively oppose him, sending them to the danger zone far worse than bombs and bullets.
"Uh, troops, you have been exposed to much contamination, it won't be safe for you to return stateside for another year or so."

Nah, he wouldn't do that, would he? um, would he?
