Rubbish. Fuel for use in internal combustion engines can be manufactured from coal and other organic feedstocks. The Germans did it in WWII and the South Africans during Apartheid. the US has pretty near an infinite supply of coal.

That advert makes a point I'm sure it doesn't mean to make, and makes it very well indeed; we have much better things to do with petroleum than burning it.

Couple of odd comments. The point of the commercial was no more than to undemonize oil. Especially, by association, the stuff that is burned. It was well done.

It is perhaps ironic that Occidental was the company of a red-diaper baby, Armand Hammer.
