Less than half of college graduates are proficient at reading and understanding short texts. This would be humiliating at the high school level. At the university level it's an unmitigated disaster.
Unfortunately, there are no longer enough literate numerate people in the USA to both educate the young and keep the country running.
And what would the USA do with the incompetents currently institutionalized as "teachers?"
