Stick a Fork in McCain. He's Done.

Probably the only person that doesn't know John McCain will never be President is John McCain -- and that includes his campaign staff and his family.

He showed up smiling at David Letterman (who looks more and more like "The Joker" without the makeup with every passing week) to "announce" that he was indeed running for President just as he has been every day for decades. Large applause followed by a national shrug. "Never happen. Vote him off the island. Next."

But yet he once had everything going for him, didn't he? What happened? What happened is that the country, as far as John McCain goes, woke up and took a long look. It has had a long chance to take this long look and decided, "Nope." But was too polite to say why.

Peggy Noonan, among other pundits, dances around the reason -- in a very polite way today in her Wall Street Journal column, How McCain Got Dinged. The article opens with the subhead, "He's had quite a life," and closes with "His promise is that he's Moe Greene--he made his bones when the rest of them were out chasing cheerleaders." All of which is a polite way of saying, "John, you're just too old."

If, by some distant mischance, McCain were to win he'd be 72 by the time he took office and, should fortune be kind, 80 when he left. The Presidency these days may be many things but it isn't a geezer's game. Will McCain get off the stage before the lights dim? So far, in the fading light, he isn't making a move. How long before the voters start to mumble, "Get the hook?"

For me, it was the "Luke Skywalker" speech in 2000. He did that and my reaction was basically as it would later be to Howard Dean's "scream" speech in '04: "Whoa! Where in hell did that come from? That boy ain't right."

In addition to his age, and his 5+ years as a POW, I've said for some time now that McCain is physically sick. He's had major surgury on the left side of his face...he sports a scar from his temple to below his jawline. He's quite careful now with camera angles and will do what he can to put the right side of his face towards them.

Oh, yeah. Do we get to talk about his positions? McCain-Feingold, anyone?

The media love him, and he's attractive to those without the fortitude to take a position (read: "Independants"), but he's gone as far as he's going to go.

It's a shame to see what politics can do to a man. He tries to be some things to all people. Clinton got away with that somewhat. Conservatives are a tad more principled, I think.

My heart does ache when I think of the torture endured by him by the friends of Fonda, Clinton, and Kerry.

Patriots please take a stand!
