Michael Yon Walks the Walk

Michael Yon continues the best on the spot reporting from Iraq available anywhere, without favoritism and without fear: "I came to Iraq to walk the line .... Here in Iraq, where so many things are so very different from the way they are reported in the mainstream media, I am actively guided by the advice of these men every step of the way. I did not come to Iraq with the intention of having someone tell me what the people on the "front lines" were thinking and feeling. I came to see with my own eyes."

Not only is he a good reporter, he's a good stylist. And his photos are something.

He's made his mark with the picture of the major carrying the little girl (Fara) in the bloody blanket. That should have won an award.

The first time I stumbled across his website I stayed to read the whole thing -- it reads like a book you can't put down. I thought I remembered his having a comment section, but must be mistaken. However, his email will serve.

The military admire him and some of them are attempting to learn his writing style so that their accounts read less like after-action reports.

His account of his meeting with the Yezidi is particularly fascinating. Makes you wonder how they survived, tucked into Iraq. They'd never have made it Iran.

I was afraid we weren't going to get any good books out of this war but I was wrong.

He's very brave.

I've to admit. The photos are arresting.

Best battlefield reporting since Ernie Pyle.
