Most People Are Good

Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost.

— Dante, Inferno, Canto 1

It’s a beautiful Summer’s day in the midst of a dark and confusing year. I’m going out to be part of this day for tomorrow is not promised. There’s a hell of a nice universe next door. Let’s go.

“I believe”… that video was sappy sentimentalism at its most cloying.
“Most people,” when you get down to it, share a base human nature that is venal, bestial, and perverse, and only the strictures of civilization and individual consciences inhibits them from being far worse than they already are. Of course, those firewalls are rapidly decaying as well, thanks to the colonization of our minds and souls by the entertainment-media complex and the sociopaths who run it.

“Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life, and children, as is said above, when the need is far distant; but when it approaches they turn against you.”

    Machiavelli, The Prince, Chapter 17

    Still, we must all try.

I’ve found that most people try to be decent.
Howsumever, I do carry a pocket cannon for
    the rare exceptions.

Most people aren’t. Only roughly 20 percent are good. Another 20 percent are pure evil. The other 60 percent will go which ever way the wind blows.

And contemporary country bites, including this song. Too feminized. There are exceptions including Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson and probably a few others that I don’t know about because my local contemporary country station doesn’t play them.

Give me Bob Wills and George Jones.

I agree with Jewel and Steve in Greensboro.

I have a “EMS” theory about people- evil, mean, stupid.
Usually they start stupid, work their way to mean, & eventually reveal themselves as just plain evil.
    My $.02- I don’t carry change.

One on one, most people are decent.
In group, most people are herd members – will do as the alpha of the herd directs.
    Why is this?
    Laziness and fear.

One on one, every person must stand on their own beliefs.
In group, nobody but the alpha needs to make a stand.

One on one, each person realizes they are mentally and/or physically weak or strong.
In group, strength is equalized across the herd.

This is why one of the most important facts of life today is the Remus Rule: Avoid Crowds.
Crowds are unthinking herds that will trample all including themselves.

Never try to argue with a herd, you cannot argue with an absent mind.
It’s only possible to change the mind of an individual, herds have no minds, only feelings.
You see this all the time in the comment section of web posts. The first couple comments may make sense but the whole thread then quickly descends into pandemonium. That’s herd mentality right before your very eyes. Laziness and fear.

AFTER the holy spirit comes into their lives there is a noticeable difference in lifestyle and behavior

  • WiscoDave August 21, 2019, 8:51 AM

And sometimes the Holy Spirit comes into their lives at 3025 fps…

I agree with Jewel, Steve to my south and Mary Ann, but add Ray Wylie Hubbard. Give him a search and a listen.

As Old Remus is wont to say, regarding herd animals, “stay away from crowds”

  • Bruceph August 21, 2019, 6:58 PM

Not to be pretentious, but Dorothy Sayers translation to English dusts them all…

Midway this way of life we’re bound upon,
I woke to find myself in a dark wood,
Where the right road was wholly lost and gone.

  • Vanderleun August 22, 2019, 8:04 AM

Humm… a good translation that… I shall check it out.

Weeeelllllll … we started out good, in fact, our Dad called us “very good.” But we have always been weak and so that required a Savior. If we carry our crosses and follow Him, we can be pretty good … but how often does the ordinary person really do that … I know I’m a prime slacker …

As for those who don’t have a Savior to lead them … not so good at all.
