[Late] Boomer Anthems: Touch of Grey

[HT: That Johnny is a joker, he’s a Birddog @ Maggie’s Farm with no apologies.]

Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by number morning sky looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains I don’t care cause it’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

I see you’ve got your fists out, say your piece and get out
Guess I get the gist of it but it’s alright
Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining’s got a touch of grey

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

It’s a lesson to me
The Deltas and the East and the Freeze
The ABC’s we all think of
To try to give a little love

I know the rent is in arrears, the dog has not been fed in years
It’s even worse than it appears but it’s alright
Cow is given kerosene
Kid can’t read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene but it’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

The shoe is on the hand it fits
There’s really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit because it’s alright
Oh, well, a touch of gray, kind of suits you anyway
That’s was all I had to say but it’s alright

I will get by
I will get by
I will get by
I will survive

Saw this at Maggie’s this morning and played here again just now. I was never a Dead fan, but I love this sweet/sad song. Somehow this morning it brought on a wave of nostalgia for nothing in particular, and everything at once. Made me get all misty.

I never swallowed hype, particularly when it came to politics and music and I still don’t. The Dead always were just dead. Awful stuff.

I like most Dead performances, but what I really appreciated about them was their “sure, bring your cameras/recording gear” policy at their concerts. Most artists prohibit recording: after all, how can they get people to pay for a concert if it was available recorded. Since the variations between the performance at the Rose Garden (“Hey, how ya doin Portland!!”) and Coors Field(“Hey, how ya doin, Denver!!”) is fairly minimal, recording Portland takes gate at Denver.

The Dead didn’t care, because the overlap from one performance to the next was minimal.
